Kinesiology is a scientific term which is used for the study of human movement and especially the muscles; it is also a term which revolves around the scientific study of the following topics: * Exercise physiology - this is the study of changes in the physiological process within the body as a result of exercise. * Biomechanics - this is the study of human movement relying on the principles of physics, maths and engineering. * Motor behaviour - this is the study of the learning and control of human actions and motor skills. * Motor development - this is the study of how performance and learning of motor skills will change as the human being grows. * Pedagogy - this is the study of teaching and learning motor skills in children and adults. * Sports psychology - this is the study of the mental aspect of motor skills performance. * Sport management - this is the study of how to organise, market and develop physical activity in the community. * Athletic training - this is the study of treating acute injuries gained through sports. What can I do with a degree in Kinesiology? Students are able to select career options in preparation for their physical education teacher certificate, athletic trainer certificate or similar field. A specific degree plan will also prepare the student into physical therapy or other health departments such as health science and occupational therapy. How long does it take to get a degree in Kinesiology? On the whole it will take around 4 years at the very least to complete the total number of credit hours needed to gain your degree in kinesiology, this means that you would need to take at least 15 hours per semester. Are there any special admission requirements for the department of kinesiology? A student wishing to gain a degree in kinesiology first has to gain the foundations of kinesiology before they can enter the major, during this time students will learn of the various professions which will be open to them on graduating. Passing this course with a C or better allows a student to become a kinesiology major. What type of graduate studies does a BS in Kinesiology prepare me for? A specific degree plan will prepare the student for entry into the Master of physical therapy department, other undergraduate degree plans will prepare the student for graduate department in kinesiology and other allied health departments. Most kinesiology departments will offer a Masters degree in kinesiology which concentrates especially in pedagogy and exercise science. |
